About the Project
The Yemeni woman has long proved her worth in the society as the glue that keeps the community together through her social roles and as a leader who created significant change through her leadership and strength.
However, there seems to be a deliberate isolation of women when it comes to decision making. Already the new coalition government was no improvement from the pre-uprising one and only two female ministers made it to the cabinet in addition to a third who is a state minister.
Yemen’s Women Power is the first database of its kind aiming at documenting and highlighting the amazing Yemeni women leaders from all across the country.
This project pays special focus to leaders who did not yet get their share of attention either because they live outside the capital or because media has not yet taken interest in their profiles.
Although this is a work in progress, already there are over 200 profiles presented in this bilingual database mostly from Sana’a. The next phase will include leading women from five more governorates: Taiz, Aden, Hadramout, Ibb and Hodeidah.
There are many criteria Yemeni women leaders need to fulfill before being included in this database; a university degree, ability to use the internet, between 24 and 55, having a good reputation in her social sphere but most importantly: being active publically and already making an impact in her community.
I hope by this project of the Yemen 21 Century Forum, we contribute to empowering Yemeni women and supporting them to reach the heights they truly deserve.
